Tamaya residents can pick up a printed passport at any of the participating breweries or download Visit Jacksonville’s “Visit JAX” app on the Visit Jacksonville website. Either way, you can have your passport marked at each JAX Ale Trail location and earn rewards and prizes.

Luckily for Tamaya residents, there are five breweries on the JAX Ale Trail just around the corner — four in neighboring Jacksonville Beach, and one just east of Tamaya.

Jacksonville Beach

Green Room Brewing at 228 Third Street North — claims to be Jacksonville Beach’s first microbrewery with plenty of selections on tap. It welcomes friendly, leashed dogs, and although it doesn’t offer food, patrons can bring munchies.

Ink Factory Brewing at 602 Shetter Avenue — the name echoes the former magazine-publishing warehouse where the brewery is located. Boasts a coffee shop, plus bakery goodies and food vendors scheduled Wednesday through Sunday. There’s also a merchandize shop.

Southern Swells Brewing Company at 1312 Beach Boulevard — a tap room and craft brewery with a popular outdoor patio. Serves snacks and features occasional food vendors.

Engine 15 Brewing Company at 1500 Beach Boulevard — also has a downtown location. The Jacksonville Beach location has a kitchen offering appetizers, salads and sandwiches, among other items, and a merchandize shop.

Just east of Tamaya, off Southside Boulevard

Bottlenose Brewing at 9700 Deer Lake Court — offers event space, a kitchen that churns out burgers, sandwiches, pizzas, salads and appetizers to go with its taproom and brewery

Does Fido need more space to explore? Continue east on Atlantic Boulevard, turn left on Mayport Road, and follow the signs north to Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park, a 450-acre beachside park with miles of trails and other activities. Note that there’s an entry fee.

Head for the beach

Four Jacksonville-area beaches offer the opportunity to enjoy surf and sand with Fido — including the one at Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park. All are different, so note times, guidelines and rules.

Jacksonville Beach is the closest dog-friendly beach to Tamaya — head east on Beach Boulevard. There are hourly restrictions for dogs during sea turtle nesting season.

The public beach at Mayport Naval Air Station is another dog-friendly beach option. Leashes are required, as is staying north of the Navy Marine Corps Relief building.

Finally, Neptune Beach — just north of Jacksonville Beach — is another beach-y option for a leashed Fido.

Located at the corner of Kernan and Beach Boulevards, near the convenient Interstate 295 beltway and St. Johns Town Center, the area’s top shopping, dining and entertainment district, Tamaya is six miles west of Jacksonville Beach and minutes from other forms of watery fun. This time, however, we’re not talking about the amazing resort-style swimming pool at Tamaya’s Residents Club, which anchors all the splendid amenity facilities (always a great option).

Here’s how to seek the water near Tamaya.

Go to the beach

You won’t find a more convenient, amenity-filled community closer to the sand. Just drive or cycle east on Beach Boulevard, which ends at A1A, Florida’s Atlantic Coast highway.

You’ll end up in Jacksonville Beach, which is the middle of three smaller coastal municipalities in Jacksonville. Public beaches with parking, facilities and seasonal lifeguards are right in front of you. Or, cruise a few miles south on A1A for Oceanfront Park.

Pack snacks, lunch, plenty of drinks, and, of course, sunscreen. You also can walk to nearby eateries for takeout goodies.

Go paddling

Own a personal watercraft like a canoe, paddleboard or kayak? Or, ready to get your feet wet with paddle sports? No problem. You’ll find quick and easy spots to put in on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, or along creeks and bayous in public parks near Tamaya.

Some of these are located in Jacksonville Beach. Rotary Park offers a fishing pier, playground for the kids and kids at heart, and is near the Safe Harbor Seafood Restaurant in case you need to refuel. Cradle Creek Preserve, a new 45-mile park near the Intracoastal Waterway, can be accessed by paddling into Cradle Creek off the Intracoastal (look for Marker 37).

Bonus points: You also can go hiking at Cradle Creek Preserve, on trails and elevated boardwalks that parallel the Intracoastal Waterway.

Go fishing
